Muratti 06/07/07 - Study 2 Week 2

STUDY 2 – METHOD OF DUNCAN

Update on 07 June 7, 2007 - Checkpoint after 2 weeks

  • Let S equal to whistle signal

H equal to desired reaction of the hamsters to the signal (go through the tunnel)

  • Hypothesis: H0: S α H
  • Procedure:

In the second week, the procedure was changed in order to check the establishment of the linkage between the signal (whistle sound) and the desired behavior of the hamsters (go through the tunnel).

At the beginning, the whistle was blown without using any reinforcement. If the hamsters go through the tunnel given the whistle sound, the linkage between the signal and the desired behavior has been established.

If the hamsters do not react to the whistle, the training will continue with 10 times whistle and pump at the same time and another 10 times which are divided into 5 times whistle and pump at the same time then 2 times whistle only then 3 times whistle and pump.
More training is used in order to remind and improve hamsters’ reaction to the whistle signal. The goal of two times using whistle only is to keep track of the linking process of hamsters’ behavior to the signal.

  • Result:

- Meena:
whistle only: no response
10 times whistle and pump: went through tunnel very quickly
5 times pump and whistle then 2 times whistle only then 3 times whistle and pump: went through the tunnel
- J:
whistle only: no response
10 times whistle and pump: went through tunnel very quickly
5 times pump and whistle then 2 times whistle only then 3 times whistle and pump: not working
- E:
whistle only: no response
10 times whistle and pump: not working
5 times pump and whistle then 2 times whistle only then 3 times whistle and pump: not working

  • Conclusion:

All the hamsters have not been able to react to the whistle yet. However, Meena went through the tunnel when the whistle was blown after being reminded. J showed reaction only to negative reinforcement. This is because Meena has been trained one week before J.

E showed no reaction to the whistle even when negative reinforcement was used. This may due to the difference in species as Meena and J are Roborovskii while E is winter white hamster. It may react to stronger wind or even another factor.

  • Plan:

- Continue training with new procedure with Meena and J
- Try a stronger fan with E
